2 Important Mantras To Tell Yourself on a Tough Day:

1. This is the only time this is the first time you have to do this.

If you're having to do something brand new that pushes you out of your comfort zone take a moment to realize that this is the ONLY time it's going to be this new and challenging.

I told myself this daily when I was first starting out as a new graduate in my veterinary career. Suddenly I had to be presenting myself as the doctor instead of the student which meant making very important (in some cases life or death) calls on my own. This one simple mantra helped me to continue to be brave and show up for my patients.

One of my first patients was supposed to be a routine annual preventative visit. In turned out to be in heart failure. It would have been easy to feel overwhelmed, but I reminded myself of the education and knowledge I had gained to prepare me for that point. I realized this was the only time I was going to have to be managing a heart failure case on my own for the first time, and that every one after this was going to be a little more familiar and easier. And they were.

It didn't happen overnight, but gradually everything became easier, more automatic, and routine. Whatever you're experiencing right now may feel really overwhelming and scary. But it's not going to be that way forever. Focus on one step at a time and know that you're learning and becoming stronger so that the next step is going to be just a little bit easier. Don't look at the marathon ahead of you, focus on being brave just for the next step.

2. Mistakes are a sign that you are challenging yourself. Mistakes are when we learn the most and grow stronger.

If you are putting yourself out there and challenging yourself enough, you are going to make mistakes. As high achievers, we tend to thrive for perfectionism. But perfectionism and a fear of failing is a really good way of limiting your full potential. You can play it safe and avoid mistakes, but how is that really serving you?

If you're having a day when you're feeling like nothing is going right you have two options:

  • You can let yourself spiral into a state of self-pity, feel like a failure, and give up.
  • You can recognize that mistakes are an opportunity to learn from what went wrong. Some of the biggest mistakes are when we grow the most, become stronger, and become more confident.

Don't let your mistakes hold you back. You are awesome for trying something new, putting yourself out there, and growing. Be brave. Focus on your next step and believe in yourself. <3
